While they can create great synth-based summer party music, Walk The Moon’s real talent is in their vocal ability and the quieter songs of the record. The Moon can be seen with the naked eye most nights as it traces its 27-day orbit around our planet. Beginning with a lone guitar and quiet drums, gradually building up and adding in more parts, ‘I Can Lift a Car’ leaves you thoroughly impressed with what this band can do. It will totally take you off guard, and is probably the best track on the album, ‘I Can Lift a Car’ being a close second. ‘Iscariot’ is a sombre piano track which shows off the group’s immense vocal ability, not only from Petricca, but from the whole band, sending shivers up your body better than any heavy-beat party track. After a 30-second instrumental synth track ‘lions’, it’s as if you’re listening to a totally different band. The lead vocals delivered by Nicholas Petricca give off a slightly different tone to other indie-pop bands – conveying a less ‘sparky’, ‘peppy’ kind of feel – which in many ways is a huge benefit, and sets them apart from bands of the same genre.īut what really caught my attention were the two songs at the end of the album. WALK THE MOON is consistently good, but I will agree with other reviewers that I wasn't crazy about 'Iscariot,' a slow track that doesn't quite pack a punch. Also, I think that they lean more towards the (light) rock genre than pop, which can be seen in songs such as ‘Lisa Baby’ and ‘Tightrope’. Walk The Moon’s overall sound is upbeat and constantly moving – with a mix of heavy drums, synth and guitar.
While many of Walk The Moons’ songs could be seen as in the same vein as the music of Two Door, the American band are different in many ways, and in some ways do things better than Two Door. I think on their first listen, many people would just pass off Walk The Moon’s self-titled first signed album as a knock-off of Two Door Cinema Club – but there’s a lot more going on here than just that similarity.
